View the individual product pages below for more information about the chemical analysis, available formats, and applications for each grade of Monel® we offer.

Monel® 400 | UNS N04400

Monel® 400 is a nickel-copper alloy that is hardened by cold working only. Monel® 400 provides good weldability and moderate to high strength metal characteristics. Monel® 400 exhibits excellent resistance against multiple corrosive agents, as it is resistant to sea water, high temperature steam, caustic solutions, and salt. 400® sheet is available in thicknesses ranging from .018 to .140" with bar available in wrought bar up to 11” diameter. Seamless pipe is available up to 8” NB, while tubing is available up to 3”.

Monel® 400 Properties

Monel® 400 Series is extremely useful in temperatures up to 1000°F (538°C) and high temperature steam atmospheres. It is frequently used in aerospace, chemical processing and machine engineering. Applications include:
  • Industrial heat exchangers
  • Boiler feed water heaters
  • Chlorinated solvents
  • Marine engineering

Monel®  R405 | N04405

Monel® R405 is the free machining version of the 400 Series. Monel® R405 has the same composition as Monel® 400 but with added sulfur. The added sulfur act as chip breakers during machining, providing better machinability than the 400 grade. This alloy also provides excellent strength, corrosion resistance, and weldability. Applications include Meter & Valve Parts, Fasteners, Screw Machine Products, Oil Refinery Piping & more.

Monel® R405 Specifications

Monel® R405 nickel alloy meets a variety of industrial and international specifications, including:
  • UNS N04405
  • ASME SB-164
  • AMS 4674
  • QQ-N-281

Monel® K500 | N05500

Monel® K500’s increased property features are obtained by adding aluminum and titanium to the nickel-copper base. This results in a high-strength Monel® variant that exhibits increased hardness and strength from precipitation hardening heat treatments.

Monel® K500 Applications

Monel® K500 is highly suitable for a wide range of corrosive applications including centrifugal pump shafts. Additional uses include:
  • Doctor blades and scrapers
  • Oil-well drill collars and instruments
  • Electronic components
  • Springs

Monel® Material Advantages

Each Monel® alloy provides its own unique sets of features, depending on the application. Monel® metal materials exhibit high corrosion resistance, making Monel® ideal for saltwater, freshwater and other challenging environments. Monel® has excellent strength and is even stronger than steel. Monel® is very malleable, and can be brazed, welded and soldered. Monel® can be formed into multiple shapes, including sheet, pipes, rods, plates, flanges and more. Monel® also has a high alkali resistance and is resistant to acids. Additionally, it also has a low coefficient of thermal expansion.

Monel® Nickel-Copper Metal Alloy for Corrosion Resistant Applications

Monel® superalloys are commonly utilized in environments and applications that require high corrosion resistance and increased strength. Direct applications include:
  • Marine components
  • Pump shafts
  • Chemical processing equipment
  • Heat exchangers
  • Valves and fittings

Monel® vs Stainless Steel

When comparing Monel® and stainless steel it is important to note that both have corrosion resistant properties. However, Monel® provides increased corrosion protection against acids, alkalis, and chemicals in high temperature environments. Since Monel® is a superalloy, provides enhanced characteristics, and is often used in more volatile applications, it is generally more expensive than stainless steel.
